  • Restoring bite force
  • Keeping adjacent teeth stable
  • Preventing cavities and gum disease
  • Preventing facial sagging and premature ageing

Implant

If you are missing teeth and your gums and jaw are healthy, you may benefit from dental implants. A dental implant with a crown replaces a missing tooth or several missing teeth and is a great way to keep your jaw healthy, maintain a stable bite and restore your beautiful smile.

A dental implant is a biocompatible titanium rod that your dentist places in your jaw to mimic the root of a tooth. Over several months the jawbone grows around the rod and anchors it in place. Depending on the number of missing teeth you want to replace, a single tooth, dentures, and bridges can be attached to an implant.

Bridge

A dental bridge is an excellent solution for filling a gap in your smile as long as the surrounding teeth are healthy.

A fixed bridge is the most common type of bridge and consists of a prosthetic tooth in the middle of two dental crowns, which are permanently bonded to the teeth on either side of the gap

Dentures

When you are missing all or several teeth, removable complete or partial dentures are a good way to maintain your bite and restore a natural looking smile.

Your dentist will take an impression of your mouth either before extraction or after the gums have healed. The impression is used to fabricate your dentures.

Depending on your unique situation, the dentures may be fitted immediately after extraction, or more commonly after the extraction site has healed.

High-quality dental implants in Glasgow

An advanced dental implant procedure could be perfect for you if you have lost most or all your natural teeth.

The dental implant procedure involves attaching a full arch of prosthetic teeth to four or six dental implants, providing a permanent alternative to dentures.

Placing implants in the jaw at certain angles allows your dentist to support an entire bridge of beautiful, high-quality replacement teeth with a small number of implants, rather than using a single implant for each tooth.

Patients who have been turned down for dental implants in the past may be suitable candidates for Same-Day Teeth because these implants are placed toward the front of the mouth in denser bone.

You can receive your new teeth on the same day as your initial implant fitting. Once your implants have been placed, your dentist will attach a provisional bridge, restoring your smile and chewing functionality.

Several months later, once your implants have fully healed, you’ll attend a follow-up appointment to have your temporary bridge swapped out for a permanent one.

Dental implant process in Glasgow

There are several different steps involved in the dental implant process, and it starts with your initial consultation.

This is your chance to discuss your hopes and concerns about the procedure, and you’re dentist to assess your suitability. They’ll also be able to determine whether you need any additional treatments, such as jawbone preparation (bone graft surgery).

If you do need any additional treatments to prepare for dental implants, you’ll need to be fully healed and recovered before you can undergo implant placement.

Our dentists do this by making a small cut in your gum to expose the bone underneath and drilling a hole into the bone where the titanium post will sit.

Your gum will then be closed with stitches if you need them, but not everyone does.

If you opt for same-day smile implants, your new teeth will be restored the same day, but usually, your gums and bone will need time to heal before the abutment is attached. This can take anywhere between 6-12 weeks.

Once you’ve fully healed, your replacement tooth (or teeth) can be fitted, which are custom-made to match the shape and colour of your remaining natural teeth.

Finally, we’ll provide all the necessary aftercare advice and get you booked in for a follow-up appointment to see how you’re getting on with your new smile!

Dental implants in Glasgow for nervous patients

The dental implant procedure, for some, sounds incredibly daunting. Especially those who already suffer from dental anxiety.

But you shouldn’t let this stop you from achieving your dream smile.

Here at Shawlands Dental Care, we have many tried and tested methods to help you feel much calmer and more comfortable during your treatment – including IV sedation.

IV sedation makes it so that you’re unaware of the treatment, sending you into a sleep-like state so that you don’t feel any pain or discomfort associated with the procedure.

It’s completely safe to use, and our experts are trained to care for sedated patients to ensure ultimate comfort and safety.

What are the consequences of missing teeth?

  • Loss of jawbone
  • Difficulty keeping teeth clean
  • Difficulty chewing and eating
  • Change in biting force
  • Grinding and clenching
  • Shifting teeth

Do I need to replace my missing teeth?

If you are missing a tooth, the surrounding teeth begin to drift into the space. This makes your teeth more prone to decay and gum disease and can adversely impact your appearance.

After extraction, the bone that supported the tooth begins to shrink and gives your face a hollow look. The longer you wait to replace the tooth, the more bone volume you lose.

There are plenty of options for replacing missing teeth, but the option that works best for you requires an assessment of your dental health and collaboration between you and your dentist.

Is the dental implant treatment right for me?

There are many reasons why people get dental implants – from replacing a failing or missing tooth to supporting rapid bone loss.

But are they the best option for you?

The answer to this question depends on not only your smile goals, but the condition of your teeth and gums and whether or not you have sufficient jaw bone to support your implants.

During an initial consultation with our experienced implant dentists, we’ll assess your dental health, discuss your smile goals, and take X-rays of your jawbone to help us determine if dental implants are the right choice to help solve your dental issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

There’s no age limit on dental implants, and age alone shouldn’t stop you from exploring your options.

So long as you’re in overall good health and have sufficient bone density, dental implants could be the best option to restore your smile.

However, it may be too late to consider dental implants if you’re suffering from prolonged tooth loss, advanced gum disease or certain systemic health conditions – as they can make the placement and healing processes more challenging.

To find out if dental implants are suitable for you, book a consultation with our expert team at Shawlands Dental Care!

The surgery itself shouldn’t be painful, as such, as our dentists will numb your mouth with local anaesthetic.

However, you may feel a slight pressure whilst we work, but it shouldn’t cause any discomfort.

If you’re nervous about getting implants, we also offer IV sedation to put you to sleep during the procedure – meaning you won’t feel anything at all. If this is something you’d be interested in, be sure to let a member of our team know!

After we’ve placed your implants, you might experience some soreness, swelling, bleeding or bruising.

This is totally normal and nothing to worry about, and should improve within a week post-surgery.

In the meantime, you can ease any discomfort with over-the-counter painkillers, like paracetamol or ibuprofen.

To be eligible for dental implants, your mouth needs to be in a healthy condition.

If you’ve been told you aren’t suitable for dental implants, there may be a few reasons why.

Some of these reasons include:

  • You have active gum disease – Gum disease creates an environment that increases the risk of infection around dental implants, which can lead to failure or even loss of the implant.
  • You smoke (including e-cigarettes and chewing tobacco) – Whilst it’s possible to still have dental implants if you smoke, your dentist will recommend that you quit before undergoing the surgery. This is because it can make the procedure much more complicated, and makes the implants more likely to fail.
  • You drink heavily – Drinking over the recommended units of alcohol per week can lead to various symptoms, including dry mouth. When your implants are healing, this dryness allows excess bacteria to build up, and with no saliva to wash it away, you’re more prone to infection and implant failure.
  • You have uncontrolled diabetes – If you have uncontrolled diabetes, you may be more prone to gum disease, dry mouth and impaired wound healing, which all complicate the dental implant process.

These issues can be rectified, by seeking additional dental treatment to eliminate gum disease, quitting smoking, cutting down on alcohol consumption and getting any health conditions, like diabetes, under control, to reduce the risk of complications.
