Types of braces

There are various orthodontic treatment types available. Some of the most popular include:

  • Metal braces – If you have large gaps between your teeth, severe misalignments or a malformed bite, metal braces will be the best option for you. Using a series of metal wires and brackets, they apply all the necessary force to your teeth to push them into your desired position and help you achieve the smile you’ve always dreamed of.
  • Ceramic braces – ceramic braces work in the exact same way as metal alternatives, only they use clear or tooth-coloured wires and brackets, so would be ideal for patients who want to straighten their teeth discreetly.
  • Lingual braces – Rather than being fixed on the front surfaces of the teeth, lingual braces are fixed on the inner side. They’re another virtually invisible option, making them a great choice for those who want to straighten their teeth or close gaps inconspicuously.
  • Clear aligners – Clear braces, like Invisalign aligners, are perfect for those who need to correct misalignments, crowding and mildly malformed bites, but don’t want to sacrifice certain foods, compromise their oral health, or like the look of traditional braces.

Orthodontic treatments at Shawlands Dental Care

Here at Shawlands Dental Care, we offer all of the above treatments to our patients, as well as a few others – including Cfast braces, Six Month Smiles, and QuickStraightTeeth.

With so many options available, it can be difficult to know which is right for you, but during an initial consultation with our expert orthodontists, we’ll assess your smile and walk you through all the available options to help you make the best decision.

What problems can braces solve?

Gapped teeth, overcrowding and malformed bites (among other things) can cause a range of problems for patients.

From poor self-esteem to issues with chewing and speech, orthodontic problems can really take a toll on our lives, but braces in Glasgow help solve all these problems, so you can laugh with friends, chat with colleagues and smile for family photos without having to worry about the way your teeth look.

How does the teeth straightening process work?

The first step to straight teeth is to book a consultation with our Glasgow orthodontists.

During your appointment, we’ll assess the condition of your teeth and talk through some of the available options – making sure to listen to your concerns and answer any of your questions to make sure you’re happy to continue with your treatment.

The teeth straightening process itself will differ, depending on the treatment you choose, but all methods – whether you opt for traditional fixed braces or a more modern clear aligner system – work by exerting pressure on your teeth and jaws to help you achieve straighter teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Early adolescence – between the ages of 10-14 – is considered the best time to get braces, but this doesn’t mean they’re ineffective if you’re older.
Braces are ideal for patients of all ages who want to correct their orthodontic issues – be it misaligned, gapped or overcrowded teeth – and we regularly see older patients in their 40s, 50s and even their 60s coming in to discuss their options.

The answer to this question depends on the type of treatment you choose.
For some, you’ll need to see your orthodontist every couple of months to check up on progress and for adjustments to be made. But for others, you may only need to go back in to collect your custom-crafted and pre-made aligners every couple of weeks as your treatment progresses.
During your first appointment, our dentists will communicate clearly how often you’ll need to return to the practice, and get you booked in for your follow-ups.

We offer a few different types of orthodontic solutions here at Shawlands Dental Care, including:
Ceramic braces – Using tooth-coloured wires and brackets, ceramic braces are ideal for those with moderate to severe orthodontic issues who want to go about their treatment discreetly.
Invisalign – These clear aligners are perfect for patients who don’t want to deal with unsightly, uncomfortable wires and brackets, and can help correct mild to moderate orthodontic issues.
CFast braces – For those who need a quick and discreet way to straighten their teeth, perhaps before an important event or in time for a holiday, Cfast braces are the perfect option. They focus on straightening out the six front teeth on the upper and/or lower arch.
Six Month Smiles – As another quicker alternative to traditional orthodontics, Six Month Smiles uses clear brackets and wires to discreetly modify mild to moderate orthodontic issues in just six months!
Not sure which treatment is right for you?
