While there’s no doubt that the economy has had a negative impact recently, many who have been able to continue working have found themselves in the enviable position of being much better off.
By saving money on things like zone cards and coffees by not going into the office,(not to mention the much longer for holiday), more people have started to invest in things that they have been putting off for a long time.
According to the Office for National Statistics, spending on dental services increased by threefold during the most recent lockdown.
Shawlands Dental Care is one of the Glasgow’s largest clinics and, since 2014, they have been the go-to surgery for high end treatments such as Invisalign and dental implants. Recently voted the Practice of the Year for the 4th year in a row, they have certainly seen a demand for private treatments since they have been able to safely carry out treatments again.
Dr Haroon Ismail (Invisalign provider), says “I think there’s a few reasons why we’re seeing this upturn. As well as the obvious change in financial situations some people have found themselves in, some of my patients have used lockdown as an opportunity to have a bit of a secret makeover and are looking forward to revealing themselves when they’re finally allowed to socialise and get back to the office in person. It’s hard not to be excited for them”
Dr Arfan Ahmed BDS told us “one of my previous dental implant patients has decided to have another tooth done after he was given a bonus for working in a supermarket during the pandemic. It’s great to see people being rewarded for their hard work during what’s been a pretty scary time but I don’t think it’s just down to a change in financial circumstances that’s responsible. People have more flexibility now – by working from home, they’ve freed up the time they would have spent on a commute or they’re able to pop in during the day which is making their life so much easier”.
It seems that one good thing to come of the pandemic is the fact people are paying more attention to wellness in all areas of their life and realise that their oral health is an integral part of that.
